DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Warns Public About Traffic Violation Scam

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about another scam making the rounds that falsely claims a person has an outstanding traffic violation and labels the message as a “Final Notice.”

In a Facebook post, the Sheriff’s Office said the notice is not legitimate and warned residents not to be fooled by the document’s official appearance. According to the post, the scam notice may resemble something from the State of Alabama, but it also references the Municipal Court of St. Louis County Traffic Division, showing that it did not come from the State of Alabama.

The Sheriff’s Office specifically warned the public not to scan the QR code shown on the notice or on any unexpected document unless they know exactly what it is and where it came from.

Officials also urged residents who receive one of the notices to disregard it and not provide any personal information.

The scam document circulating online is made to look official and includes threatening language about an alleged traffic violation, court enforcement action, and possible penalties. Authorities say those kinds of tactics are commonly used by scammers to pressure people into reacting quickly without taking time to verify the information.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said several people have already reported receiving the scam. The agency shared an image of the notice currently circulating so the public can recognize it and avoid falling victim.

Residents are encouraged to use caution with any unexpected text, message, or notice demanding immediate action, especially when it includes a QR code, asks for personal information, or threatens legal consequences.

Anyone with questions about whether a notice is legitimate should contact the appropriate law enforcement agency or court directly using official contact information, rather than responding to the message itself.
