PRESS RELEASE

FROM: Assistant Chief Walter Colbert
Boaz Police Department
Date: 02/19/2020

On 02/18/2020, at approximately 2:49 pm, the Boaz Police Department received a call of a shooting that had just occurred at Family Security Credit Union located at 310 US Highway 431 Boaz, AL 35957. When Officers arrived they observed a white male (victim) laying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound.

Boaz Fire Medics arrived a few seconds later and began performing CPR on the victim. Other Officers on the scene located the suspect in the lobby of the Credit Union and he was quickly arrested. The suspect still had the murder weapon, a 9mm pistol, in the back pocket of his pants. The victim was placed into a Boaz Fire Department ambulance and CPR was continued. Unfortunately the victim died from his injuries before he could be transported to the hospital.

The suspect, who was identified as Jossie Cheyenne Bowen age 26 of Boaz, was taken to the Boaz City Jail and charged with Murder. The victim was identified as Colton Craig McKinney age 30 of Crossville, AL. The Marshall County Coroner arrived on the scene and ordered the victim’s body to be taken to The Department of Forensics Science in Huntsville, AL for an autopsy.

Investigators later determined that the suspect’s sister was the ex–wife of the victim. Both the suspect and his sister had gone to Family Security Credit Union after learning that the victim was there. Apparently she was going to confront the victim over a joint bank account that they still had together. Once she and the suspect arrived a confrontation occurred in the south side of the parking lot and the victim was shot. There were several witnesses to the incident and they were questioned by Investigators.

The suspect will be transported to the Marshall County Jail later today with a bond amount of $200,000.
