DECATUR – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Driver License Division recently has modified its hours of operation in several of its Driver License Examining Offices across the state to provide citizens with additional opportunities to conduct driver license business.
The agency’s Secretary Hal Taylor said he is pleased to announce beginning Monday, Dec. 2, the Decatur Driver License Examining Office will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“As I have said before, we continually work to identify ways to improve and strive to meet our customers’ needs,” Secretary Taylor said. He added credit for expanded hours must go to Senator Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, for reaching out to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office concerning opening earlier.
Senator Orr, a native of Decatur, said, “It has been my pleasure to partner with Secretary Taylor and his Driver License staff, as well as the Morgan County Sheriff Ron W. Puckett, who made it possible for ALEA to open its Decatur office earlier and stay open later each work day. Working with these departments for a solution that serves the public needs better has been truly gratifying.”
Secretary Taylor said this is but one example of how ALEA’s Driver License Division has worked during this past year to better meet customers’ needs. In April of this year, the agency launched a pilot program to open its Birmingham, Opelika and Mobile Driver License Examining Offices from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday. Then, on Nov. 2, ALEA added the Huntsville office to the Saturday lineup. The next phase will begin Saturday, Dec. 7, when Montgomery, Sheffield, Jacksonville, Tuscaloosa and Dothan offices will be added to that list.
On Saturdays, walk-in customers are assisted on a first-come, first-served basis for such services as first issuances and renewals of standard driver licenses and non-driver IDs, as well as STAR IDs; knowledge and road skills tests; and out-of-state transfers. For reinstatement, customers may call 334.242.4400 Monday through Friday. It is important to note Driver License Examining Offices in Birmingham, Opelika, Mobile and Huntsville will be open Saturday, Nov. 30, despite it being Thanksgiving and Iron Bowl weekend.
“We promised earlier in the year to closely monitor Saturday operations. Offering a sixth day of business in the first four offices has been well-received, and I feel it will be as successful as we adjust the hours in Decatur and add another five locations to our Saturday operations,” Secretary Taylor said.
