Alabama “Back to School” Tax Holiday Weekend, July 19 – 21, 2019

The State of Alabama will hold its 14th Annual “Back to School” Sales Tax Holiday, July 19– 21, 2019. This will be for school related items (see official list at the bottom for exact items) and begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 19th and will end at midnight Sunday, July 21st. The “Back to School” sales tax holiday gives shoppers the chance to save a little money on items needed for back to school use. Items included are schools supplies, computers, books, and clothing. The State of Alabama gives customers a break from the 4% state sales tax. To see if your local city or county is participating and offering a break from their local sales tax, visit this link below:

A little history about the “Back to School” Sales Tax Holiday. It began back in 2006, and was enacted pursuant to §§40-23-210 through 213, Code of Alabama, 1975, whereby no state sales or use tax is due on covered items as defined in the Law and in the Back to School Sales Tax Holiday Rule 810-6-3-.65. The sales tax holiday begins the third full weekend of July, starting at 12:01 a.m. on the third Friday in July and ends at twelve midnight the following Sunday. A county or municipality by resolution or ordinance adopted at least 30 days prior to the third full weekend of July, may provide for the exemption of “covered items” from county or municipal sales or use taxes during the same time period, under the same terms, conditions, and definitions as provided for the state sales tax holiday.
