Class 6A Boys’ Soccer Semifinals

HUNTSVILLE – Fort Payne scored twice in
the second period and the Wildcats’ defense did the rest in a 2-0 AHSAA Class
6A boys’ semifinal victory over defending state champion Homewood Friday at
John Hunt Soccer Complex.
The 29th AHSAA Class 6A Girls’ Soccer
Championships got underway Thursday with semifinal matches in Classes 1A/3A and
4A/5A for boys and girls. Friday’s schedule includes Class 6A and Class 7A
boys’ and girls’ semifinals as well as the 1A/3A and 4A/5A girls’ and boys’
championship matches.
All finals are being live-streamed by the NFHS
Network over its subscriber-based platform at www.nfhsnetwork.com.
With the victory, Fort Payne (17-9-1) will face St. Paul’s
Episcopal (16-6-2) in the 6A finals Saturday at noon. Scoring goals for Coach
Tony Shanklin’s Wildcats were junior forwards Norman Romero and Kenneth
Toledo. The first goal by Romero broke a scoreless tie early in the
second period at 46:31. Toledo added the insurance goal with just 34
seconds remaining in the match.
Fort Payne freshman goalkeeper Alex McPherson had six
saves and Homewood junior keeper Noah Klein had eight saves.
Class 6A Boys’ Soccer Semifinals
St. Paul’s Episcopal 2, Pelham 1
HUNTSVILLE
– Senior forward Coleman Little scored two goals, the last one coming at
65:48, to lift St. Paul’s Episcopal past Pelham 2-1 in the Saints Class 6A
boys’ state semifinal match Friday at John Hunt Soccer Complex.
Little gave the Saints (16-6-2) of Coach Chad
Harrelson an early lead with the first goal of the match at 5:23 in the
first period. Pelham (16-10-1) tied the match in the second period when
senior midfielder Irvin Rodriguez Benitez slipped a shot into the net at
52:29. Pelham had eight shots on goal, but Saints goalkeeper Grayson
Myles stopped six – to secure the win. David Clinton had two saves
as the Panthers goalkeeper.

matches are scheduled 1A/3A and 4A/5A Thursday, May 9; for 6A and 7A, Friday,
May 10. Finals will be May 10 (1A/3A and 4A/5A) and May 11 (6A and 7A). The
