Severe Storms Possible Across North Alabama Friday
Residents across North Alabama should prepare for the possibility of severe weather Friday as a strong weather system moves through the Tennessee Valley, forecasters said.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region in a slight risk for severe thunderstorms, meaning scattered storms could become strong enough to cause damage. Storms are expected to develop along and ahead of a cold front pushing east through the area during the day and into the evening hours.
Meteorologists say the primary threat will be damaging straight-line winds, as storms are likely to form in fast-moving bands. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, localized power outages and downed trees could occur where the strongest gusts develop.
Forecasters also caution that isolated tornadoes are possible, particularly if individual storms or small clusters are able to strengthen within the moist, unstable air moving northward into the Tennessee Valley. Although atmospheric instability is expected to remain modest, strong winds at multiple levels of the atmosphere could allow some storms to rotate.
Storm activity is expected to increase Friday afternoon and continue into the evening before moving east of the area overnight.
Emergency officials advise North Alabama residents to remain weather-aware, review safety plans, and monitor trusted weather sources for watches or warnings as conditions evolve.
