A recall involving bulk cake and bread mixes sold nationwide has been elevated to the most serious level by federal regulators due to the presence of an undeclared allergen that could pose a severe health risk.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified the action as a Class I recall, indicating a reasonable probability that consuming the affected products could lead to serious injury or death. Officials say the mixes contain milk that was not disclosed on the product labeling, creating a potentially life-threatening hazard for people with milk allergies.
The recall was first issued in December by B.C. Williams Bakery Service and applies to several large-format mixes distributed to commercial users across the country. After further review, the FDA determined that the risk warranted the highest level of recall.
Recalled products include:
Spice Cake Mix – 50-pound multi-wall kraft, poly-lined moisture-proof bags, Batch 221
Bread and Roll Mix – 50-pound multi-wall kraft, poly-lined moisture-proof bags, Lots #072225-217, #072225-218, #080325-200, #080325-201, #081625-203, #081625-204, #092225-222 through #092225-228, #101725-208, and #101725-209
Swiss Chocolate Cake Mix – 50-pound multi-wall kraft, poly-lined moisture-proof bags, Lots #072925-220 and #071825-36
Health officials are advising businesses and consumers to immediately stop using the recalled products. Anyone with a milk allergy should discard the mixes or return them to the place of purchase. Medical attention should be sought right away if symptoms occur after exposure.
Food safety experts note that strict allergen labeling requirements exist because reactions can range from mild effects such as hives or swelling to severe, potentially fatal reactions like anaphylaxis. The FDA says the decision to upgrade the recall underscores the seriousness of the risk posed by undeclared allergens and serves as a reminder for manufacturers to ensure accurate labeling on all food products.
