PUBLIC NOTICE: Candidacy Now Open for City Council and Mayoral Races in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Al. — Citizens across DeKalb County with a desire to make a difference in their local communities now have the opportunity to step forward and run for public office. Qualifying for candidates seeking election to city council or mayoral positions is officially open and will continue through Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

This is a critical window for anyone interested in serving their community in an elected capacity. From Fort Payne to Rainsville and the many other municipalities throughout the county, residents can now qualify to appear on the ballot for municipal elections later this year.

While some incumbents may be seeking re-election, it’s important to remember: every seat is open each election cycle. In Alabama, municipal positions are not lifetime appointments. Just because a person currently holds an office doesn’t mean that seat belongs to them permanently. These roles come open regularly by design, and any qualified resident has the right to run.

“Sometimes people are hesitant to run against someone they know or respect,” said a local election official. “But elections are about choice. It’s not personal—it’s part of the democratic process. Everyone has to pick a place to run, and that often means challenging an incumbent.” Incumbents often get offended or upset when someone signs up against them. But they have to realize that seat is not their seat, it is a governing seat, on that governing body, and they are only in it for that 4 year period. Once the election cycle opens, the seat becomes open for anyone to sign up in it.

According to Alabama state law, most cities operate under an at-large system, meaning that council candidates run for specific “places” or numbered seats, rather than by district. These places are open to any qualifying candidate, regardless of where they live in the city.

Running for office doesn’t require political experience—only a commitment to public service, a desire to be involved in local decisions, and meeting the basic qualifications set forth in Alabama law. For many, it’s a powerful way to shape the future of their city.

If you’re considering a run for city council or mayor in any DeKalb County municipality, contact your local city clerk or the Alabama Secretary of State’s website to find filing instructions and qualifications.

Deadline to qualify is June 24, 2025. Don’t miss the chance to make your voice—and your leadership—count.
