City of Rainsville Recognizes National Police Week

National Police Week is an annual event that occurs every May. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund will hold ceremonies, including the 37th Annual Candlelight Vigil, to honor the fallen officers whose names have recently been added to the Memorial.

The 37th Annual Candlelight Vigil was held on Tuesday, May 13, the names of 345 law enforcement officer who died in the line of duty were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D. C.  Including 3 from Alabama Huntsville police officer Garrett Crumbly, Mobile Port Authority officer Kimberly Sickafoose and Montgomery police officer Carlos Taylor.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
