Marshalls, national retailers coming to Fort Payne’s DeKalb Plaza

Fort Payne, Ala. – On Monday, Fort Payne Mayor Brian Baine announced that national
retailer Marshalls has executed a lease agreement with Drinkard Development to open
a store in the DeKalb Plaza Shopping Center. Marshalls is owned by TJX Companies,
Inc. which also owns HomeGoods, Homesense, Sierra, TJ Maxx, and Winners stores.
“The City of Fort Payne welcomes Marshalls and each new store that will add to our
existing base of retailers to further enhance the shopping experience for the greater Fort
Payne area,” said Baine. “This type of store is something residents and visitors have
asked about for a long time now, and with the help of the great team at Drinkard
Development, we were able to make it happen. We hope shoppers will enjoy this new
addition to our community as we work to increase the shopping, dining, and
entertainment options available to people in our area.”
“Without the support and assistance for the mayor’s office and the City Council, this
project would not be moving forward,” said Jason Grimmett of Drinkard Development.
“This is an exciting project for our team here at Drinkard, and we look forward to
revitalizing the DeKalb Plaza Shopping Center.”
In October, the Fort Payne City Council authorized a memorandum of understanding to
support the redevelopment of DeKalb Plaza primarily through a limited tax sharing
agreement. The sales tax revenue generated through the DeKalb Plaza redevelopment
projects are estimated to be between $400,000 and $800,000 per year.
Drinkard Development said work will commence on portions of the center in the coming
weeks as some buildings are demolished to make way for the new buildings that will be
home to national retailers. Those announcements are expected in the coming months
as details are finalized, and the redevelopments are expected to be completed in 2026
